Air Canada Workers in Favour of Strike

Posted on September 14, 2011

AIR CANADA FLIGHT ATTENDANTS GIVE CUPE STRIKE MANDATE

After rejecting a tentative agreement in late August, Air Canada’s 6,800 flight attendants –represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) – have now given their union a strike mandate if a tentative agreement cannot be reached.  If the flight attendants do head for the picket lines, it could happen as early as Wednesday, Sept. 21.

In commenting on the vote by its flight attendant’s, Air Canada said that it is business as usual for the airline and that its customers can continue to book Air Canada flights with confidence.

The carrier noted that talks with CUPE resumed on Sept.1, 2011 and are ongoing — facilitated by a federally appointed mediator.

Air Canada also said that in the event an agreement is not reached with CUPE, the union must serve Air Canada with a minimum 72 hours notice if it intends to proceed with strike action.  Should this occur, the airline would implement a partial schedule including code-share flights operated by its partner airlines.

If the flight attendants do strike, Travel Resources will contact our clients who may be affected by this event to provide them with assistance in securing alternate flight arrangements.

Travel Resources continues to monitor the situation and will provide our clients with information as it becomes available.
